The Pinfold
The Pinfold - Located next to the Driveway to Westview Bungalow, Moor Lane and the bend on Retford Road at the village Entrance. 151 Sq mtrs of land was allocated to the parish under the 1845 Inclosure Award, which states the land was 6 Roods in size one rood or rod is = to 25.2929sq M. The Vestry minute book then said after the land had been awarded in 1845, in 1853 the decision was made to build within the piece of land a pen for holding animals. The PINDER would catch any livestock that had got loose and put them in the PINFOLD and would charge a price to the animals owner to get it back. Historic Minute References:
09/06/1853 Vestry Meeting - At a meeting held in the schoolroom 9th Day of June 1853, it was agreed that the Surveyor of the Highways do build a Pinfold at his earliest convienience, also the same meeting it was agreed that the Surveyor of Roads & Drains do fence the Wharf on the east side with a post and rail fence, the costing of the materials for the above to be done by the rate payers as Common Work subject to the Rev Charles Wasteneys Eyre giving the bricks for the Pinfold.
26/03/1856 Vestry Meeting - A meeting held in the Vestry Room it was agreed that William Cobb should be appointed as Pinder for the Parish of Rampton his duty shall be to pound all the stock and strays on the highways in the Parish of Rampton. Also all persons keeping stock on the highway verges shall take care of their stock and therefore be allowed to remain on the said roads on payment of the sum they are let for. All persons failing to comply with these conditions, the Pinder shall be bound to seize and take the said stock to the Pinfold.
01/04/1902 Annual Parish Meeting – It was proposed by Mr Dixon and Seconded by Mr Quickfall that the Surveyor of Roads and Drains exercise his decision in using the Pinfold to use any of the bricks left from it in the bridge repairs
27/05/1910 Annual Parish Meeting – Pinfold to be locked, proposed by Mr Wiswould and seconded by mr J Baker that the Pinder should cause the Pinfold gate to be locked at once. Carried. The clerk was also instructed to call a meeting of Landowners and occupiers, as given in schedule a of the Parish Award. To decide what shall be done with the Pinfold.
14/06/1910 Landowners and Occupiers meeting for property shown in schedule A of the Parish Award or their authorised agents to Determine whether the Pinfold should be sold, demolished or repaired. The three options 1) It was proposed by Mr J Quickfall seconded by Mr Mill that the Pinfold and its land be sold and demolished. Result 59 votes. 2) Proposed by Mr Fletcher and seconded by Mr Hoyland that the Pinfold be repaired 276 votes (this motion carried). 3) Proposed by Mr Olivant and seconded by Mr Bayes that only the Pinfold building be sold, result 76. Several gentlemen offered to provide carts to remove the rubbish accumulated near the Pinfold, and it was decided to take steps to prevent anymore from being deposited.
By the 1940's the bricks of the pinfold wall have fallen again into disrepair and were removed. The 151 sq mtrs of land remained.
On 27/06/1956 Rampton Parish Council leased the Pinfold land to Mr J Quickfall at an annual rate of 1 Shilling." This was collected by the Parish Clerk annually and became 5p rent upon decimalization in 1971. The rent was increased to 10p per annum in 1974, 20P in 1980 and was paid annually until the death of Mr Quickfall in the 1980's.
