Diana Eyre's Educational Foundation

On 01/12/1758 Diana Eyre, daughter of Anthony Eyre, gave the rent of three and a half acres of Land in Rampton Marsh to pay for a teacher to educate 10 deserving Rampton boys preferably chosen from the poor. The deed of endowment was dated 0301/1759. By 1845 local maps showed this land as "The Trustees of Rampton Free School". In 1839 additional land known as the three cowgates was added, presumably this made the land up to its current 5.99 acres.

White's Directory of Nottinghamshire 1832 states "The village school was endowed with 3.5 acres of land in Rampton Marsh off Torksey Ferry Road, worth together about £4 per year, which the schoolmaster uses to teach 13 poor children." Morris & Co Directory 1869 "There is a school for children with an endowment for the education of ten poor children for free". Kelly's Directory 1900 "The school, erected for 90 children, with average attendance of 74 is endowed by the Eyre Family, a total of 6 acres of land which produced £13 10s a year to assist the education of 10 poor children.

On 24 Aug 1923 the Board of Education updated the charities scheme: "Diana Eyre's Foundation founded by the Deed of 1 December 1758" this scheme advised that the trustees were the Lord of the Manor of Rampton, The Vicar, Churchwardens and a representative of Nottinghamshire County Council Education Authority, at that time the charities land was let to a Mrs Burkitt for £12 a year.

In 1987 the 5.99 acres of land of Torksey Ferry Road was rented to the gravel quarry which enabled the Trustees to invest the profits, maximising the income, the dividend of which has been used to make grants.

in 1989 the Scheme of the foundation was further modernised so that the trustees are made of one Ex-Officio Trustee, the present benefice of Rampton, Three Nominated Trustees who serve 4 year terms, being one nominated by the Parish Council, one nominated by the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and one nominated by Nottinghamshire County Council. Additionally there is one Co-opted Trustee who is a person who through residence, occupation or employment has special knowledge of the Parish of Rampton.

The Foundation Can Help in the following ways through its charitable objectives:

The trustees shall apply the income of the Foundation in one or more of the following ways:- (a) in promoting the education (including social and physical training) of persons under the age of 25 years who are resident in the parish of Rampton And who are in need of financial assistance and in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing - (i) in awarding to such persons scholarship, exhibitions, bursaries, maintenance allowances or grants Tenable at any school, university, college of education, or other institution of further ( including professional and technical ) education approved for the purpose by the trustees; (ii) in providing financial assistance, outfits, clothing, tools, instruments or books to assist such persons to pursue their education ( including the study of music and other arts ), to undertake travel in furtherance thereof, or to prepare for or enter a profession, trade, occupation or service on leaving school, university, or other educational establishment. (b) in or towards providing for children resident in the ecclesiastical parish of all saints, Rampton, instruction in the doctrines of the church of England by means of a Sunday school or otherwise; (c) in or towards providing for the Rampton primary school such special benefits of any kind not normally provided by the local education authority as may from time to time be agreed between the trustees and the governors of the said school after consultation with the local education authority.

In recent year's the foundation's income has been approximately £8000 which has been distributed to people under 25 resident in Rampton in the ways mentioned above.
